In October 1951, the foundation stone of what was to become St. Peter’s Church was laid by Rt. Rev. William Barnes Bishop of Birmingham. The dual purpose Church was opened in 1953, to serve the needs of the people living in the newly built district of Tile Cross. Prefabs had been erected in 1948/49 on what was Bruierly farm land and soon in the early 1950’s council houses were added along Burleton Road and Haywood Road, bordering the new Church.

The building was used as a Church, drama centre, youth club, cinema, dance hall and an annexe to the rapidly growing Shirestone Primary School. By the mid 60’s it was decided that a new Church should be built adjoining the old one which would then become the Church Hall.  On the 13th November 1968 Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother open the new St. Peter’s Church.
